Building your own house

An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer-contractor of his plans to leave the house-building business to live a more leisurely life with his wife and enjoy his extended family. He would miss the paycheck each week, but he wanted to retire. They could get by. The contractor was sorry to see his good worker go & asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor.
The carpenter said yes, but over time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials. It was an unfortunate way to end a dedicated career. When the carpenter finished his work, his employer came to inspect the house. Then he handed the front-door key to the carpenter and said, "This is your house... my gift to you."The carpenter was shocked! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently.
So it is with us. We build our lives, a day at a time, often putting less than our best into the building. Then, with a shock, we realize we have to live in the house we have built. If we could do it over, we would do it much differently. But, you cannot go back. You are the carpenter, and every day you hammer a nail, place a board, or erect a wall. Someone once said, "Life is a do-it-yourself project." Your attitude, and the choices you make today, help build the "house" you will live in tomorrow. Therefore, Build wisely

A true story

A young and successful executive was traveling down a neighborhood street, going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was watching for kids darting out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no children appeared. Instead, a brick smashed into the Jag's side door! He slammed on the brakes and drove the Jag back to the spot where the brick had been thrown. The angry driver then jumped out of the car, grabbed the nearest kid and pushed him up against a parked car, shouting, "What was that all about and who are you?Just what the heck are you doing? That's a new car and that brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money. Why did you do it?"The young boy was apologetic. "Please mister ... please, I'm sorry... I didn't know what else to do," he pleaded."I threw the brick because no one else would stop..."With tears dripping down his face and off his chin, the youth pointed to a spot just around a parked car."It's my brother," he said."He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up." Now sobbing, the boy asked the stunned executive, "Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for me."Moved beyond words, the driver tried to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. He hurriedly lifted the handicapped boy back into the wheelchair, then took out his fancy handkerchief and dabbed at the fresh scrapes and cuts. A quick look told him everything was going to be okay. "Thank you and may God bless you," the grateful child told the stranger.Too shook up for words, the man simply watched the little boy push his wheelchair-bound brother down the sidewalk toward their home. It was a long, slow walk back to the Jaguar. The damage was very noticeable, but the driver never bothered to repair the dented side door. He kept the dent there to remind him of this message: Don't go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention! .

A decision is made with the brain.
A commitment is made with the heart.
Therefore, a commitment is much deeper

Can you sleep when the wind blows?

Years ago, a farmer owned land along the Atlantic seacoast. He constantly advertised for hired hands. Most people were reluctant to work on farms along the Atlantic. They dreaded the Awful storms that raged across the Atlantic,Wreaking havoc on the buildings and crops. As the farmer interviewed applicants for the job, he received a steady stream of refusals. Finally, a short, thin man, well past middle age, approached the farmer. "Are you a good farm hand?" the farmer asked him. "Well, I can sleep when the wind blows," answered the little man.Although puzzled by this answer, the farmer, desperate for help, Hired him. The little man worked well around the farm, busy from Dawn to dusk, and the farmer felt satisfied with the man's work. Then one night the wind howled loudly in from offshore.Jumping out of bed, the farmer grabbed a lantern and rushedNext door to the hired hand's sleeping quarters. He shook the little man and yelled, "Get up! A storm is coming! Tie things down before they blow away!"The little man rolled over in bed and said firmly, "No Sir. I told you, I can sleep when the wind blows." Enraged by the response, the farmer was tempted to fire him on the spot. Instead, he hurried outside to prepare for the storm. to his amazement, he discovered that all of the haystacks had been covered with tarpaulins.the cows were in the barn, the chickens were in the coops, and the doors were barred. The shutters were tightly secured. Everything was tied down.Nothing could blow away. The farmer then understood what his hired hand meant, so he returned to his bed to also sleep while the wind blew.

When you're prepared, spiritually, mentally, and physically,You have nothing to fear. Can you sleep when the Wind blows through your life? The hired hand in the story was able to sleep because he had secured the farm against the storm. We secure ourselves against the storms of life by grounding ourselves in the Word of God.We don't need to understand, we just need to hold his hand to have peace in the middle of storms.

The Shipwreck - the story

The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him, and every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming.Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements and to store his few possessions. But then one day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sky. The worst had happened; everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger. "God, how could you do this to me!" he cried. Early the next day, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching the island. It had come to rescue him. "How did you know I was here?" asked the weary man of his rescuers. "We saw your smoke signal," they replied.
It is easy to get discouraged when things are going badly. But we shouldn't lose heart, because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of pain and suffering. Remember, next time your little hut is burning to the ground--it just may be a smoke signal that summons The Grace of God.

Poem

When I Asked God for Strength
He Gave Me Difficult Situations to Face

When I Asked God for Brain & Brown
He Gave Me Puzzles in Life to Solve

When I Asked God for Happiness
He Showed Me Some Unhappy People

When I Asked God for Wealth
He Showed Me How to Work Hard

When I Asked God for Favors
He Showed Me Opportunities to Work Hard

When I Asked God for Peace
He Showed Me How to Help Others

God Gave Me Nothing I Wanted
He Gave Me Everything I Needed

Be Strong

Be Strong .......by Maltbie Davenport Babcock; 1858 - 1901

We are not here to play, to dream, to drift;

We have hard work to do, and loads to lift;

Shun not the struggle—face it;

'Its God's gift. Be strong!

Say not, "The days are evil. Who's to blame?"

And fold the hands and acquiesce—oh shame!

Stand up, speak out, and bravely, in God's name. Be strong!

It matters not how deep intrenched the wrong,

How hard the battle goes, the day how long;

Faint not—fight on! To-morrow comes the song.

Thought for the day

Whether you're a musician, a writer,
an athlete or a businessman;
There is no getting around it.

The only way -You are going to get anywhere in life,
is by working hard to achieve your dreams.
If you do, you'll win;
If you don't you won't.

Its story time

A psychology professor at the University of Miami knew his students expected a terrifyingly long final exam. To play with their minds a little (what do you expect from a psychology professor?) he only put ONE question on the final exam.He watched the reactions of the students as they all opened the exams and saw the one question. Initially they all looked relieved, but as the difficulty of the question began to sink in, those relieved faces sagged to confusion and consternation. All, that is, except for one student. He read the question, tapped his pencil into his palm a few times, then jotted something down on the test paper. He walked up to the professor, handed him the final, and walked out. The professor blinked in surprise, looked at what the student wrote, and smiled. The professor wrote "100%" on the top of that student's test.
The question: What is courage?
The student's answer: This is.

Swamiji's speech

In one of his lectures in California, Swami Vivekananda described about his condition during wandering days as follows:

"Many times I have been in the jaws of death, starving, footsore, and weary; for days and days I had no food, and often could walk no farther; I would sink down under a tree, and life would seem to be ebbing away. I could not speak, I could scarcely think, but at last the mind reverted to the idea:
"I have no fear nor death; never was I born, never did I die; I never hunger or thirst. I am It! I am It! The whole of nature cannot crush me; it is my servant.
Assert thy strength, thou Lord of lords and God of gods!
Regain thy lost empire!
Arise and walk and stop not!"
And I would rise up, reinvigorated; and here I am today, living! Thus, whenever darkness comes, assert the reality and everything adverse must vanish. For after all, it is but a dream. Mountain-high though the difficulties appear, terrible and gloomy though all things seem, they are but Maya. Fear not, and it is banished. Crush it, and it vanishes. Stamp upon it, and it dies."

Black and Gold Boxes - Author unknown

I have in my hands two boxes
Which God gave me to hold
He said, "Put all your sorrows in the black,
And all your joys in the gold."

I heeded his words, and in the two boxes
Both my joys and sorrows I store
But though the gold became heavier each day
The black was as light as before.

With curiosity, I opened the black
I wanted to find out why
And I saw, in the base of the box, a hole
Which my sorrows had fallen out by.

I showed the hole to God, and mused aloud,
"I wonder where my sorrows could be."
He smiled a gentle smile at me.
"My child, they're all here with me."

I asked, "God, why give me the boxes,
"Why the gold, and the black with the hole?"
"My child, the gold is for you to count your blessings,
the black is for you to let go."

Book Review

The Little Black Book of Positive Thoughts:Simple Concepts of Life's Jopurneys.

Jarvis Clark sets out to share some of the many learning experiences which were very helpful to him through life. He does it with candor and wit. Often, in our pre-packaged world where so many thing some as a "wrap," we are given a pap instead of the whole grain product. Clark's book is the Whole Grain without the soft sell of slick packaging. His straight forward approach to life is refreshing. Many of us, under the influence of mass media forget to take a look at the personal learning experiences some have to offer. I suggest you give Jaarvis Clarke his chance to share with you real human thoughts. Gene Reynolds, author of Let-Go, Let-God Awareness

Valuable Thoughts

Know that no matter how bad things seem, they'll always get better. The warmth of spring always follows the harshest winter.
Let love fill your heart instead of hate. When hate is in your heart, there's room for nothing else, but when love is in your heart, there's room for endless happiness.
Manage your time and your expenses wisely, and you'll suffer less stress and worry. Then you'll be able to focus on the important things in life.
Never ignore the poor, infirm, helpless, weak, or suffering. Offer your assistance when possible, and always your kindness and understanding.
Open your eyes and take in all the beauty around you. Even during the worst of times, there's still much to be thankful for.
Never forget to have fun along the way. Success means nothing without happiness.
Ask many questions, because you're here to learn.
Refuse to let worry and stress rule your life, and remember that things always have a way of working out in the end.
Share your talent, skills, knowledge, and time with others. Everything that you invest in others will return to you many times over.
Even when your dreams seem impossible to reach, try anyway. You'll be amazed by what you can accomplish.

Happiness Mantra

Accept others for who they are and for the choices they've made even if you have difficulty understanding their beliefs, motives, or actions.

Break away from everything that stands in the way of what you hope to accomplish with your life.

Create a family of friends whom you can share your hopes, dreams, sorrows, and happiness with.

Decide that you'll be successful and happy come what may, and good things will find you. The roadblocks are only minor obstacles along the way.

Explore and experiment. The world has much to offer, and you have much to give. And every time you try something new, you'll learn more about yourself.

Forgive and forget. Grudges only weigh you down and inspire unhappiness and grief. Soar above it, and remember that everyone makes mistakes.

Grow- Leave the childhood monsters behind. They can no longer hurt you or stand in your way.

Hope for the best and never forget that anything is possible as long as you remain dedicated to the task.

Ignore the negative voice inside your head. Focus instead on your goals and remember your accomplishments. Your past success is only a small inkling of what the future holds.

Journey to new worlds, new possibilities, by remaining open-minded. Try to learn something new every day, and you'll grow.

Value of your life - story

A well known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20 bill. In the room of 200, he asked, "Who would like this $20 bill?"Hands started going up.He said, "I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this." He proceeded to crumple the dollar bill up.He then asked, "Who still wants it?"Still the hands were up in the air."Well," he replied, "What if I do this?" And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe.He picked it up, now all crumpled and dirty. "Now who still wants it?" Still the hands went into the air."My friends, you have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way.We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. You are special - Don't ever forget it!

Nutrition and Memory improvement

Hope this must be very interesting information. I came through this in a web site.
You probably know already that a diet based on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and “healthy” fats will provide lots of health benefits, but such a diet can also improve memory. Research indicates that certain nutrients nurture and stimulate brain function.
B vitamins, especially B6, B12, and folic acid, protects neurons by breaking down homocysteine, an amino acid that is toxic to nerve cells. They’re also involved in making red blood cells, which carry oxygen. (Best sources: spinach and other dark leafy greens, broccoli, asparagus, strawberries, melons, black beans and other legumes, citrus fruits, soybeans.)
Antioxidants like vitamins C and E, and beta carotene, fight free radicals, which are atoms formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. Free radicals are highly reactive and can damage cells, but antioxidants can interact with them safely and neutralize them. Antioxidants also improve the flow of oxygen through the body and brain. (Best sources: blueberries and other berries, sweet potatoes, red tomatoes, spinach, broccoli, green tea, nuts and seeds, citrus fruits, liver.)
Omega-3 fatty acids are concentrated in the brain and are associated with cognitive function. They count as “healthy” fats, as opposed to saturated fats and trans fats, protecting against inflammation and high cholesterol. (Best sources: cold-water fish such as salmon, herring, tuna, halibut, and mackerel; walnuts and walnut oil; flaxseed and flaxseed oil)Because older adults are more prone to B12 and folic acid deficiencies, a supplement may be a good idea for seniors. An omega-3 supplement (at any age) if you don’t like eating fish. But nutrients work best when they’re consumed in foods, so try your best to eat a broad spectrum of colorful plant foods and choose fats that will help clear, not clog, your arteries. Your brain will thank you!

Seven Rules of Motivation - a nice article from website

Seven Rules of Motivation
#1 Set a major goal, but follow a path. The path has mini goals that go in many directions. When you learn to succeed at mini goals, you will be motivated to challenge grand goals.
#2 Finish what you start. A half finished project is of no use to anyone. Quitting is a habit. Develop the habit of finishing self-motivated projects.
#3 Socialize with others of similar interest. Mutual support is motivating. We will develop the attitudes of our five best friends. If they are losers, we will be a loser. If they are winners, we will be a winner. To be a cowboy we must associate with cowboys.
#4 Learn how to learn. Dependency on others for knowledge supports the habit of procrastination. Man has the ability to learn without instructors. In fact, when we learn the art of self-education we will find, if not create, opportunity to find success beyond our wildest dreams.
#5 Harmonize natural talent with interest that motivates. Natural talent creates motivation, motivation creates persistence and persistence gets the job done.
#6 Increase knowledge of subjects that inspires. The more we know about a subject, the more we want to learn about it. A self-propelled upward spiral develops.
#7 Take risk. Failure and bouncing back are elements of motivation. Failure is a learning tool. No one has ever succeeded at anything worthwhile without a string of failures.

You can overcome with anger...Just read this Zen story about Overcoming Anger. Hope its true and we can also remember this teacher's sayings when our temper goes up.

A Zen student said to his teacher, “ Master, I have an ungovernable temper. Help me get rid of it.”“ You have something very strange,” said the teacher. “Show it to me.”“ Right now I cannot show it to you.”“Why not?"“ It arises suddenly.”“ Then it cannot be your own true nature,” said the teacher, “if it were, you would be able to show it to me at any time. Why are you allowing something that is not yours to trouble your life?”Thereafter whenever the student felt his temper rising he remembered his teacher’s words and checked his anger. In time, he developed a calm and placid temperament.

A nice Zen Story to share with

A young student of Zen was going to the market to buy vegetables for the monastery where he was studying. On the way he met a student from another monastery.“Where are you going?” asked the first student.“Wherever my legs take me,” replied the other. The first student pondered over the answer as he was sure it had some deep significance. When he returned to the monastery, he reported the conversation to his teacher, who said: “You should have asked him what he would do if he had no legs.”The next day the student was thrilled to see the same boy coming towards him.“Where are you going?” he asked and without waiting for a reply continued, “Wherever your legs take you, I suppose. Well, let me ask you . . .”“You’re mistaken,” interrupted the other boy. “Today I’m going wherever the wind blows.”This answer so confused the first boy that he could not think of anything to say. When he reported the matter to his teacher, the old man said: “You should have asked him what he would do if there were no wind.”Some days later the student saw the boy in the market again and rushed to confront him, confident that this time he would have the last word.“Where are you going?” he asked. “Wherever your legs take you or wherever the wind blows? Well, let me ask you . . . . ”“No, no,” interrupted the boy. “Today I’m going to buy vegetables.”

Extract from a web page - Mnemonic devices to improve memory

Mnemonics (the initial “m” is silent) are clues of any kind that help us remember something, usually by causing us to associate the information we want to remember with a visual image, a sentence, or a word.

Common types of mnemonic devices include:

Visual images - a microphone to remember the name “Mike,” a rose for “Rosie.” Use positive, pleasant images, because the brain often blocks out unpleasant ones, and make them vivid, colorful, and three-dimensional — they’ll be easier to remember.

Sentences in which the first letter of each word is part of or represents the initial of what you want to remember. Millions of musicians, for example, first memorized the lines of the treble staff with the sentence “Every good boy does fine” (or “deserves favor”), representing the notes E, G, B, D, and F. Medical students often learn groups of nerves, bones, and other anatomical features using nonsense sentences.

Acronyms, which are initials that creates pronounceable words. The spaces between the lines on the treble staff, for example, are F, A, C, and E: FACE.

Rhymes and alliteration: remember learning “30 days hath September, April, June, and November”? A hefty guy named Robert can be remembered as “Big Bob” and a smiley co-worker as “Perky Pat” (though it might be best to keep such names to yourself).

Jokes or even off-color associations using facts, figures, and names you need to recall, because funny or peculiar things are easier to remember than mundane images.

“Chunking” information; that is, arranging a long list in smaller units or categories that are easier to remember. If you can reel off your Social Security number without looking at it, that’s probably because it’s arranged in groups of 3, 2, and 4 digits, not a string of 9.

“Method of loci”: This is an ancient and effective way of remembering a lot of material, such as a speech. You associate each part of what you have to remember with a landmark in a route you know well, such as your commute to work.

Nice wordings

"Before you start some work,
always ask yourself three questions - Why am I doing it,
What the results might be and
Will I be successful.

How to improve memory

I studied this in some website.
There are some basic things you can do to improve your ability to retain and retrieve memories:

Pay attention. You can’t remember something if you never learned it, and you can’t learn something — that is, encode it into your brain — if you don’t pay enough attention to it. It takes about eight seconds of intent focus to process a piece of information through your hippocampus and into the appropriate memory center. So, no multitasking when you need to concentrate! If you distract easily, try to receive information in a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted.

Tailor information acquisition to your learning style. Most people are visual learners; they learn best by reading or otherwise seeing what it is they have to know. But some are auditory learners who learn better by listening. They might benefit by recording information they need and listening to it until they remember it.

Involve as many senses as possible. Even if you’re a visual learner, read out loud what you want to remember. If you can recite it rhythmically, even better. Try to relate information to colors, textures, smells and tastes. The physical act of rewriting information can help imprint it onto your brain.

Relate information to what you already know. Connect new data to information you already remember, whether it’s new material that builds on previous knowledge, or something as simple as an address of someone who lives on a street where you already know someone.

Organize information. Write things down in address books and datebooks and on calendars; take notes on more complex material and reorganize the notes into categories later. Use both words and pictures in learning information.

Understand and be able to interpret complex material. For more complex material, focus on understanding basic ideas rather than memorizing isolated details. Be able to explain it to someone else in your own words.

Rehearse information frequently and “over-learn”. Review what you’ve learned the same day you learn it, and at intervals thereafter. What researchers call “spaced rehearsal” is more effective than “cramming.” If you’re able to “over-learn” information so that recalling it becomes second nature, so much the better.

Be motivated and keep a positive attitude. Tell yourself that you want to learn what you need to remember, and that you can learn and remember it. Telling yourself you have a bad memory actually hampers the ability of your brain to remember, while positive mental feedback sets up an expectation of success.

Target!

There was a young student-archer who reached such proficiency in his art that he could shoot an arrow into a tree and then cleave that arrow into two with the next shot. He began to boast that he was a greater archer than his guru.

One day his guru, a venerable old man in his 70's, asked the youth to accompany him on a trip across the hills. The journey was uneventful until they came to a deep chasm.A single log spanned the chasm.

The guru walked down to the centre of the log, unshouldered his bow and taking an arrow shot it into a tree on the other side. His next shot cleaved the first arrow into two."Now it's your turn," he said, walking back to where his student was standing.

The youth stepped gingerly on the log and very slowly and carefully made his way to the middle. But his heart was in his mouth. He knew that if he lost his footing, he would plunge to his death. His hands trembled as he strung an arrow into his bow.

Preoccupied with the danger he was in, he found it hard to focus on the target. Consequently when he let go of the arrow, it missed the tree altogether. Whimpering, he turned around. "Help me!" he shouted to his guru. "I'll fall!"

The old man walked up to him, took his hand and stepping backwards led him to safety. Neither of them said a word on the return journey but the boy had much to think about.

He had realised that to be a master of his art it was not enough to know how to control the bow, he had to learn how to control his mind too. So like master we must know how to target our goals with mind all set on it.

Book Review - from website

Think Better: An Innovator's Guide to Productive Thinking by Tim Hurson is a guide to productive thinking (a.k.a. creativity) that includes topics like:
the three major barriers to productive thinking
"kaizen" vs "tenkaizen" (incremental vs. revolutionary change)
the importance of separating your thinking (diverge/converge)
It also includes a comprehensive description of Hurson's six-step Productive Thinking Model. In each of these chapters he explains in, giving examples and including real-life stories about how they can be applied.
Step 1: What's Going On? - truly understanding the issue or challenge, and avoiding the "great answer - wrong question" trap.
Step 2: What's Success? - visioning, using active imagination to create clear, measurable goals and success criteria
Step 3: What's the Question? - framing the challenge in question form
Step 4: Generate Answers - using techniques like brainstorming to generate a range of solution ideas to choose from
Step 5: Forge the Solution - uses a technique called "POWER" to develop a chosen idea into a the robust solution
Step 6: Align Resources - developing the solution into a workable plan, with timelines, milestones, people involved, resources needed

When to Be Practical - nice story enjoy

When to Be Practical by Mohammed Gwath Shattari
As three travelers crossed the mountains of the Himalaya, they discussed the importance of putting into practice everything they had learned on a spiritual plane. They we so engrossed in their conversation that it was only late at night that they realized that all they had with them was a piece of bread.

They decided not to discuss who deserved to eat it; since they were pious men, they left the decision in the hands of the gods. They prayed that, during the night, a superior spirit should indicate who should receive the food.

The following morning, the three men rose together at sunrise."This is my dream," said the first traveler. "I was taken to places I had never visited before, and enjoyed the sort of peace and harmony I have sought in vain during my entire life on earth. In the midst of this paradise, a wise man with a long beard said to me: "you are my chosen one, you never sought pleasure, always renounced all things. And, in order to prove my allegiance to you, I should like you to try a piece of bread."

"That’s very strange," said the second traveler. "For in my dream, I saw my past of sanctity and my future as a master. As I gazed at that which is to come, I found a man of great wisdom, saying: "You are in greater need of food than your friends, for you shall have to lead many people, and will require strength and energy."

Then the third traveler said:"In my dream I saw nothing, went nowhere, and found no wise men. However, at a certain hour during the night, I suddenly woke up. And I ate the bread."The other two were furious:"And why didn't you call us before making such a personal decision?"

"How could I? You were both so far away, finding masters and having such holy visions! Yesterday we discussed the importance of putting into practice that which we learn on a spiritual plane. In my case, God acted quickly, and had me awake dying of hunger!"

Few creative ways of thinking

Brainstorming: Pretty much everyone has heard of this creative thinking technique. Brainstorming works best with a fairly large group of people; larger the group, bigger the number of ideas thrown around. Be willing to entertain any idea, even the most absurd. Improvise on the seemingly impossible ideas to see if they can be turned into realistic solutions. Try and get everyone to think outside the box and you will be surprised at what comes out of it!
Playing detective: Asking questions like who, when, where, why, what and how can help you get a clear direction of what you need to do. Coming up with a new product or application could be simplified considerably if one follows this simple rule. Jot your response to each down, so you can draw inferences later. Following this pattern will help you narrow the focus of your creativity.
Dealing with your demons: A mental block, preconceived notions, narrow mindedness; the list of threats to creative thinking is never ending. Solving them, however, requires no more than a willingness to adapt. Let go of inhibitions; don't let 'reality' tie you down. Think freely; work with even near to impossible ideas. Once in the right frame of mind, you will be able to channel your thoughts whichever way you desire. "Boost Your Creativity: Exercises and Advice for Great Creative Thinking", by Robert Allen, available at amazon.com suggests some interesting exercises to overcome your creative thinking challenges.

Positive and negative

We live in a world surrounded by both positive and negative people and atmosphere. Just reading the news or having a conversation with most people you can get a lot of negate energy transmitted. Some people always comment on negative way. This isn’t always a bad thing, either, since you can learn how not to use such negative comments if you know about it yourself. Discontentment and negativity can often lead to more action than just pretending you feel wonderful when you don’t. But the actual problem occurs when we get carried away with so much negativity that it will bring down our energy level. Only someone with incredibly high emotional energy reserves can take the onslaught of negativity in our society and still have the positive focus to take action.

Positivity and optimism motivate and inspire. In other words, positivity creates energy which get transmitted to positive activity and success. Spend some time of your day to get yourself excited, enthusiastic and optimistic by reading good books or listening to motivation tapes etc. which can give you a huge boost in your energy. I used to read atleast two pages a from personal development. You can even listen to some good audio tapes the positivity of their speeches can give you some of the emotional energy that the world has drained from you.

Hence from today just start reading or listening....stay boosted and motivated...

Story time

Is Man Free by Osho
A man comes to a master to ask how much man is independent, free. Is he totally free, or is there a limitation? Is there something like fate, kismet, destiny, a God who makes a limitation beyond which you cannot be free?

The mystic answered in his own way - not logically but existentially. He said, "Stand up."The man must have felt this was a stupid kind of answer, "I am asking a simple question and he is asking me to stand up." But he said, "Let us see what happens."

He stood. And the mystic said, "Now, raise one of your legs up."The man, by this time must have been thinking he had come to a mad man; what has this to do with freedom, independence? But now that he has come... and there must have been a crowd of disciples, and the mystic was so respected; not to follow him would be disrespectful, and there was no harm. So he lifted one of his legs from the earth, so one foot was in the air and he was standing on one foot.

And then the master said, "That's perfectly good. Just one thing more. Now take the other foot up also.""That is impossible!" the man said, "You are asking something impossible. I have taken my right foot up. Now I cannot take my left foot up."

The master said, "But you were free. In the beginning you could have taken the left foot up. There was no binding order. You were completely free to choose whether to take the left foot up or the right foot up. I had not said anything about it; you just decided. You took the right foot up.In your very decision, you made it impossible for the left foot to be lifted up. Don't bother about fate, kismet, God. Just think of simple things."

Secret Coin

During a crucial battle, Shivaji, the great Indian King decided to attack even though his army was bit uncertain. He was confident they would win, but his men were filled with doubt. On the way to the battle, they stopped at the temple.

After praying with the men, king Shivaji took out a coin and said, I shall now toss this coin. If it is heads, we shall win. If it is tails we shall lose. Destiny will now reveal itself. He threw the coin into the air and all watched intently as it landed. It was heads. The soldiers were so overjoyed and filled with confidence that they vigorously attacked the enemy and were victorious.

After the battle a soldier remarked to the Shivaji, "No one can change destiny""Absolutely", Shivaji replied and showed him the coin, which had heads on both sides. King said, "Its true, we can't change the destiny or fortune, but we can change the coin.

Coin is the way we think and act. To take hard decisions you must be courageous, to be courageous you must be confident, to be confident you must think and act in right way Confidence is not ego or self importance.Confidence in yourself is a vital necessity if you want to make an impact in this lifetime.

Learn New Things Every Day

I read this somewhere, wish to share with you all

The mental aspect of our energy will determine how effectively we can use the physical capacity of energy. A commitment to learning new things every day is one of the best ways to keep your mental energies sharp. Although there is inherent value in the added knowledge gained from learning, the activity of learning itself can be an excellent way to improve your mental energies.

If you don’t already read at least one non-fiction book a month, make that your goal. I personally read anywhere from 1-2 books a week, almost always non-fiction. Although fiction can be a great way to stimulate the imagination, there are many ways you can do that, but unfortunately the mental learning gained from non-fiction books doesn’t have as many alternatives.

Learning doesn’t even have to be directed towards a specific purpose. Even if you don’t have to learn anything new to maintain the point you are in your life right now, pick up something you find interesting and learn about it anyways. Many people never pick up another book after they leave high-school. Learning must be a lifelong habit, not just a chore to get a degree.

Water and its benefit

I have mentioned this earlier in a post about drinking plenty of water and its benefits. Now would like to share this quote here, which is little different :
Since water does not have any calories, it acts as an ideal *filler* material in your stomach and gives you a sense of “I am full” - which in turn decreases your appetite. This works best for people who are already over-weight and are controlling their appetite in order to lose weight.

Isn't perspective a wonderful thing?

One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.
On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, 'How was thetrip?' 'It was great, Dad.' 'Did you see how poor people live?' the father asked. 'Oh yeah,' said the son. 'So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?' asked the father
The son answered: 'I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night.

Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them.' The boy's father was speechless. Then his son added, 'Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are.'
Isn't perspective a wonderful thing? Makes you wonder what would happen if we all gave thanks for everything we have, instead of worrying about what we don't have. Appreciate every single thing you have, especially your friends!

Sand and Stone

A story tells that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand:
TODAY MY BEST FRIENDSLAPPED ME IN THE FACE.
They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one whohad been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him. After he recovered from the near drowning,he wrote on a stone:
TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE .
The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?" The other friend replied "When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it.
"LEARN TO WRITE YOUR HURTS IN THE SAND AND TO CARVE YOUR BENEFITS IN STONE.
They say it takes a minute to find a special person,an hour toappreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire life to forget them.

Extracted from web page - part 2

In continuation with yesterday's article by Andrew Galasetti
Know when you’re reaching your tipping point
One of the biggest obstacles keeping people from “just doing it” is not recognizing when they’re about to hit their tipping point.
If you’ve ever found yourself asking, “is this all there is to life?”, then you are closely approaching your tipping point. The same goes if you feel like you’re about to have a nervous breakdown.
You can either succumb to your emotions; or you can stand up, fight, and just go for whatever will make you happy. Once you cross the threshold towards your tipping point, your mind will never be the same and nothing can ever stop you; except yourself.
List what you don’t like about your life
Perhaps it is focusing on negativity a little too much; but grab a piece of paper and write down what you don’t like about your life. May be you don’t have enough money or worse you aren’t happy enough. For those who really want change, it’s enough for them to take the plunge.
Keep in mind:
“Just do it” is much easier said than done. And it should be that way. It separates the people who deserve it from those who don’t.
So what are you waiting for?
get going!

Friday, January 30, 2009

Extracted from web page - part 1

“Just do it.” Three simple words that are simply powerful.
Nike made this phrase famous, but it’s not just a marketing gimmick. All you need is to “just do it” and you will reach a crucial tipping point in which you will go from saying and planning; to doing and proving.
It’s pretty scary to take a plunge into something like “just do it” implies. But here is how you go about it.
Don’t pick a time or day
“Just doing it” shouldn’t be precise; it should come to you out of the blue. There’s no need to pick a day or plan ahead.
Get pissed, get frustrated
I’ll be honest; I’m pissed and frustrated as I write this article right now. But it’s giving me an unbelievable amount of motivation, and even a little adrenaline to go for it.
Instead of fighting, crying, or complaining when you’re frustrated, funnel that energy into focus and action.
Remember that time’s a wastin’
Every month, week, day, hour, and minute you get closer to your end. Nothing will motivate you more to live than death.
Think less, act more
It might be risky, it might get you in trouble, but you must act more than you think. Forget the “what if’s.” F**K all the naysayers and whatever they tell you! Don’t worry if you fail. Don’t think about the
money you’ll lose or gain. Be a little stupid and take a lot of action.
Lose these words and phrases
These aren’t real excuses.
“I can’t.”
“I don’t have enough money.”
You don’t
need money to take the plunge.
“I don’t have enough time.”
Yes you do! I don’t care how busy you are. You don’t have enough time to wait.
“I don’t know where to start.”
“I don’t know how.”
Start learning. Get your feet wet and you’ll learn along the way.
“Later.”
No, now!
Stop acting like you’re busy
There are a lot of people out there who push papers around and act like they have so many places to go and so much to do. In reality, they’re just avoiding the actions that will get them what they really desire. May be it is because they’re scared or doubtful.
I don’t care who you are; you have time to “just do it” and chase something you want or need. You’ll just have to get less sleep, lose free time, and make lots of other sacrifices.

Some healthy food tips for your kid

Kids, especially younger ones, will eat mostly what's available at home. That's why it's important to control the supply lines — the foods that you serve for meals and have on hand for snacks.

Follow these basic guidelines:

Work fruits and vegetables into the daily routine, aiming for the goal of at least five servings a day. Be sure you serve fruit or vegetables at every meal.

Make it easy for your child to choose healthy snacks by keeping fruits and vegetables on hand and ready to eat. Other good snacks include low-fat yogurt, peanut butter and celery, or whole-grain crackers and cheese.

Serve lean meats and other good sources of protein, such as fish, eggs, beans, and nuts.

Choose whole-grain breads and cereals so kids get more fiber. Limit fat intake by avoiding deep-fried foods and choosing healthier cooking methods, such as broiling, grilling, roasting, and steaming. Choose low-fat or nonfat dairy products.

Limit fast food and other low-nutrient snacks, such as chips and candy. But don't completely ban favorite snacks from your home. Instead, make them "once-in-a-while" foods, so kids don't feel deprived.

Limit sugary drinks, such as soda and fruit-flavored drinks. Serve water and low-fat milk instead.

Interesting information I read somewhere

7 Unique Ways To Make Someone Smile

Do you want to put a smile on someone's face? Maybe make their day a little bit brighter? It doesn't have to take much time or money on your part. In fact, many things can be done as a part of your normal routine and cost little or nothing. You won't know how many people are encouraged by your kindness because smiles are contagious. Try out one or more of these 7 ways today to put smiles on their faces.
1. Write an encouraging note to others that have encouraged you or that need encouragement. Handwritten notes that are given to encourage, not just for thanking someone for a gift, are rare. That makes handwritten notes even more special. Start a new practice of sitting down and writing an encouraging note on a regular basis. You just might start an epidemic!
2. Take a friend out to lunch or invite her to your home for a meal. You will get to know each other even better than you do right now. If you feel like being more adventurous, throw a party for several of your friends and put smiles on a multitude of faces.
3. Give someone an inspirational book to read. You will feel good doing it, reading the book will change the person, and they will think of you every time they read it.
4. Ask a friend or relative if you can take care of their kid(s) for a day or evening. If you have been a parent, you know the value of being able to have a few hours of "adult time" without worrying about the children. Don't wait to be asked to baby-sit when it is required. Offer to do it at a time when the parent can do something fun and relaxing.
5. Deliver a meal to someone you know that is sick or having a rough time. We have all been sick and know the last thing you want to do is be out of bed. There are also times when life is tough and it is hard to do all of the daily chores. You can be a tremendous help by providing a meal that can be enjoyed.
6. Volunteer time to supporting your local church or charity. Every minute you dedicate to a church or charity will cause many smiles. You will put a smile on the face of each leader just for helping without being asked. You will also be putting smiles on the faces of those that are being helped through the organization.
7. Thank everyone that supports you throughout the day. The list of those that you come in contact with is endless. Remember family and friends, secretaries, co-workers, teachers, Sunday school teachers, pastors, store employees, janitors, gas station attendants, those that deliver your mail and newspaper, and servers at restaurants.
I know this is a list of 7 ways to put a smile on someone's face, but there is one more way that can't be ignored. Reveal a genuine smile to everyone you meet. You will experience how easy it is to get others to smile!

Its story time once again

A Lift and The Luggage

A man was driving his car to the town. On the way he saw a poor old man carrying a heavy load on his head. The sympathetic driver offered the old man a lift in his car to the town. The old man was very happy and thankfully entered the car and occupied the back seat. Turning back the driver was surprised to see him still carrying the load on his head. When asked he said," What you did to me is enough and more.. I don't want to trouble you further by addingthe load also to your car."Many of us travel to God like that old man still carrying our sins on our head. Let us unload our sins before His grace and feel free.

Quick Stress Relief Energy Exercise

Cook's hookup
This is great when you’re just plain frazzled, exhausted and thinking fuzzy. It will hook up the vibrational energy in your body so it is running smoothly again and infuse you with a sense of calm and relaxation.
1) Sit with one ankle crossed over the other ankle.
2) Cross one wrist over your other wrist.
3) With your two arms crossed in front, turn your hands over so palms face each other. Clasp your hands together like you’re shaking your own hand.
4) Bend your elbows so that your clasped hands turn under and in, towards your body, like a pretzel. Rest clasped hands against your heart.
5) Simply breathe gently in and out for approximately 2 minutes.
6) Then place feet flat on floor and uncross arms. Place your hands together, with only fingertips touching opposite fingertips, thumbs pointing towards your heart, hands in a "steepled" position. Breathe gently for approximately 30 seconds, and release.

Have we begun to learn?

A young man presented himself to the local expert on gems and said he wanted to become a gemologist. The expert brushed him off because he feared that the youth would not have the patience to learn. The young man pleaded for a chance. Finally the expert consented and told the youth, "Be here tomorrow." The next morning the expert put a jade stone in the boy's hand and told him to hold it. The expert then went about his work, cutting, weighing, and setting gems. The boy sat quietly and waited. The following morning the expert again placed the jade stone in the youth's hand and told him to hold it. On the third, fourth, and fifth day the expert repeated the exercise and the instructions. On the sixth day the youth held the jade stone, but could no longer stand the silence. "Master," he asked, "when am I going to learn something?" "You'll learn," the expert replied and went about his business. Several more days went by and the youth's frustration mounted. One morning as the expert approached and beckoned for him to hold out his hand, he was about to blurt out that he could go on no longer. But as the master placed the stone in the youth's hand, the young man exclaimed with-out looking at his hand, "This is not the same jade stone!" "

You have begun to learn," said the master.

Moral:Patience is a virtue, possess it if you can!

NIce article about productivity

This one is really a nice article, do go through this.
There are times when we feel disappointed with ourselves. Disappointed at not being able to give our best, disappointed with our habit of wasting time and disappointed with low levels of productivity from our end. This disappointment often leads to a negative mindset wherein we don't feel like doing anything despite knowing there's lots to do. As a result we tend to lose our motivation & excitement and feel overly lethargic. Here's a way which could help you get going despite your negative state of mind. The logic behind it is ignorance of persistent thoughts. Whenever you feel lost or low on motivation immediately take a piece of paper and do the following:

Write five tasks which would push you out of your comfort zone. Tasks which you know you are not really good at or may be tasks which you have been ignoring for long.
For the next 24 hours forget everything else and just focus on the sheet of paper.Make it a point to complete all those tasks within a day, irrespective of your other commitments.
Fold the paper and keep it with you. Forget everything else that's running on your mind and feel that the paper is your only source of strength and direction.

The most important thing is to control your mind. Any other thoughts apart from those related to your tasks should be flushed out (at least for the next 24 hours).

You would immediately feel a sense of excitement run through you. There would suddenly be a sense of direction in your mind. Most importantly, at the end of the tasks you would have achieved four objectives. One, completed tasks which you had been ignoring for long. Two, crossed your mental limitations (You would be doing stuff which you thought you weren't good at). Three, gained a new sense of self-confidence and momentum. Four, spent your past 24 hours in the best possible manner.

Keep doing this exercise whenever you feel low. Be it during office hours or 3 in the night. Once you are in a habit of following the exercise on a regular basis, your productivity levels would go high and most importantly there would hardly be a dull moment in your life.

Moreover, indirectly you would get to be aware of your strengths which you thought were never yours. The biggest obstacle when we want to do something different is our mind, which keeps telling us that we are not good at it. Another obstacle is the fear of public opinion. We are afraid of what others would think if we go about a task XYZ. During these 24 hour cycles, you would hardly get to think about your mind and public opinion. As a result there would be no external obstacles involved. Just you and your will power.

I personally find this method pretty refreshing and energizing. I'm not too sure if I've been able to put it in the right way but I hope the message has been conveyed with some clarity.

Art of Believing

Find this article on Belief I came across in some mail. Its very nice, read it and share it!

Some of the most practical success-building wisdom is found in that biblical quotation stating that faith can move mountains.Believe ,reallly believe you can move a mountain and you can. Not many people belive that they can move mountains. So as a result not many people do. On some occasion you have probably heard someone say something like,"it's nonsense to think u can make a mountain move bu just saying 'mountain , move away.' It's simply impossible.
People who think this way have belief confused with wishful thinking. And true enough ,you can't wish away a mountain. You can;t wish yourself into an executive suite. Nor can u wish yourself into a five bedroom, three bath house or the high income bracket. You can't wish yourself into a position of leadership. But you can move a mountain with belief. You can win success by believing you can succeed. There is nothing magical nor mystical about the power of belief. Belief works this way. Belief, the "the I am positive-i can " attitude generates the power, skill and energy needed to do.When you believe i can do it , the how to do it develops. Every day all over the nation young people start working in new jobs. Each of them "wishes" that someday he could enjoy the success that goes with reaching the top. But the majority of these young people simple don't have the belief that it takes to reach the top rungs. And they don't climb high, they do not discover the steps that lead to great heights.Their behavior remains that of the "average" person.
But a small number of these young people really believe that they will succeed. They approach their work with the "I'm going to the top" attitude. And with substantial belief they reach the top.Believing they will succeed and that it's not impossible -these Folks study and observer the behavior of senior executives, officers, members. They learn how successful people approach problems and make decisions. They observer the attitude of successful people. The how to do it always comes to the person who believes he can do it.
Here's an example to prove you that:-
Example Of Belief
Those who believe they can move mountains,do.Those who believe they can't cannon.Belief triggers the power to do.Believe really believe you can succeed and you will.
Over the years we have observed people who failed in business ventures and in various careers. We have hear a lot of reasons and excuse for failur.Something significant unfolds as conversations with faulures develop. In a casual soft of way,the failure drops a remark like"To tell the truth,I didn't think it would work" or " I had my misgivings before i even started out"or" Actually ,I wasn't Too surprised that it didn't work out.The "okay-i will give it a try but i dont think it will work " attitude produces failures.Always think win-win in every situation.
